Often associated with the Tree of Life, the Celtic Cross predates Christianity, the oldest example dating back to 10,000 BC. The first cross symbols possibly represented the sun, often considered to be the divine center of the cosmos, quite literally the "light of the world". The circle represents the whole, the encircling spirit, the sun illuminating, an all-embracing essence of light. In the Celtic Cross, the center is the spiritual source, here represented by a triskele motof symbolizing the mystical Celtic Trinity. The ancient Wheel-Armed Cross reflects the cosmic wheel and represents the 4 seasonal positions of the sun (the cosmic order), the 4 directions, elements and seasons. Birds, symbols of freedom and transcendence, are sacred messengers of the Celtic Underworld, connecting the Heavens (air) and Earth (Tree of Life). Design and text by Jen Delyth.
